Raising Show Quality Bettas

More Fish for Sale

Kinda hanging on to a few males as the show season is coming up. But have some later bloomers from spawns where I showed fish this past fall. These guys are a few young males from my metallic spawn 43. This spawn throw big finned fish that carry their finnage well, even in old age. They are late to develop as they get big, thick bodies before the finnage started to come in. I prefer that over fish that get big long fins on the smaller, thinner bodies.. seems the finnage is not as sturdy as the fins on a more slower maturing fish. We got some great multis, greens and coppers in this spawn. The females are all very balanced and I don’t think I had a bad female in the bunch. Many took placings this past fall. So here are some of they boys I have left.

Got a cute and young butterfly royal male. He still needs to do some growing, but he is on track to be a very nice fish. Not as good a butterfly pattern as would like for showing.. but form wise he is super nice and being butterfly he carries marble. He would be a nice male to bring good branching and big finnage to a marble line.

And last, but surely not least.. my metallics crossed to a royal male I got from Karen McAuley. If your into bettas you know she is one of the top US breeders right now. Her fish have great form and are sturdy.. good bodies and top lines. My metallics also have nice bodies, good overall balance and great branching. Colorwise we are all over the place. But, with the form genetics in these fish we will reel back the color to solid metallics. If your into multis or marbles these girls would be great.

Red Bettas for Sale

Still have lots of fish in grow outs. I went a little nuts on the reds so have a lot of fish coming. If you don’t mind them young I can make you a deal to finish growing them out. Lots of the lighter bodied Cambodian females.. some very nice bicolors. I will be separating some of the traditional Cambodian girls out to get them ready for the shows.. but the rest are available and for sale. Many are breeding these lighter bodied females to get reds without the black layer  underneath that also give a black edged scale. The black edging counts against a fish in the shows so that is why the Cambodian based breeding. Here are some of the girls. if interested, just send me an email and we will get you some ready to ship.

The two very large spawns are out of the same female but different males. One is a sibling and the other is a very nice import I have pictured here. Love the great spread on this import and the super sharp edges and branching. I have several nice males already and plenty more coming. Most of the darker bodied ones I will be keeping for the show season but if you are interested in a red butterfly pattern I have three available as well as some lighter bodied males. Here are some of the reds I will be photographing and posting soon.

Fish for Sale ~ Assorted Female

Need to spend some time photographing fish but it is my least favorite thing to do as I never seem to have enough time to get them all done. So, I cheated and took some videos of fish I will hopefully be getting photos of soon and posted to AquaBid. If you like any of the fish just send me an email and we will make arrangements to get you the fish.

These girls are from a variety of spawns. Most of them are from my F1 cross to get blue and yellow marble or grizzles. Got some very nicely patterned bicolors or mustard gas types as well as some neat marbles. Most could be better branched but I am after a color so will work in the better form in the next generation. If interested just send me an email.. otherwise we will get them photographed and on AquaBid over the coming weekend.

Nice female from my metallic spawn that, a nicely colored royal blue and a black with red butterfly pattern.

Black Bettas

Young Black Betta
Young Black Betta

Black bettas are a difficult thing to breed. Attempting to breed nice bettas in this color is not for the faint of heart as many of the really dark black females that are Melano are sterile and spawns fail. It can be discouraging to breed and encounter so many failures so it is good idea to have another line that is easier just to have some encouragement along the way. It is also difficult to get rid of the iridescence or shine from the fish to be a good black. One of our lines produces nice metallics with a lot of black underneath, so I decided to take the most black of the group and breed towards that coloring. Pictured is one of  the first males pulled in our F1 generation. He has the metallic shimmer on his body and also into his fins.. but he is not a bad place to start. Already showing some good branching, he should mature nicely.

Another young male recently pulled.. he has more of the shine but also a deeper black. He may, in time, mature with enough shine to be shown in the metallics class. I’m please with what I am seeing form wise at this young age and am happy we have a large spawn and will have plenty to choose from for both breeding and showing. As the group matures we will be looking for the darkest fish as well as the ones with the least shine to breed in our next cross. Since we are going towards the black without the shine, in a few months we will have some very nice fish for sale.

Black FM Betta

Black FM Betta

This female showed up in our metallic spawn. She is more of a chocolate color than black, and we may have to breed towards this color as well to have breedable females. This same spawn has given me 2 very nice black butterfly males that will head to the shows in a month or so. They are more this color than the really dark black as well. Also coming along is our spawn out of the huge DT chocolate male we imported from Thailand. They have another month or so to go before we will be able to really see anything. But it looks like we will have a good selection to breed towards the goal of black bettas.

AquaBid auctions updated

Photographing bettas takes a lot of time and effort to get a few good shots. We are still playing with lighting and lens settings and seem to have a way to go to get photos I really like. I took a lot of pictures Saturday.. actually spent most of the day photographing fish.. to update our AquaBid auctions and caught this about-face with the camera. Wish it was a bit clearer but it gives you an idea how quickly these fish can move and how difficult those nice shots are to get. Hope to have more fish up for sale next weekend as well as we have a lot of nice fish maturing and I won’t show them all.

Spawn 13

Our 13th spawn is coming of age.. and the boys are needing jarred. These guys are about 3 months old. This cross was from a female from our line outcrossed to a male we got at the IBC convention last year. He is Royal Blue and had huge fins.. especially the broader dorsal bases we are trying to establish in out line. This little female we pulled by accident. She was squabbling with another fish and so we pulled her thinking she was a male.

As you can see, he dorsal has the broader dorsal base that is needed to show these days.  Though still developing she is nice and balanced. I like her anal fin being pretty much level. Her tail needs to come along and get 180.. but she is showing some branching so may get there yet.

And here is one of the boys. There is good and bad about this fella. Topline has a dip behind the eyes I do not like. His anal fin is also tapered longer towards the rear.. we would like to see this more even. He is flipping his dorsal a bit, but we do have a broader base. The dorsal shape is a bit different from what my line throws so we will wait and see how it matures out. For the first time I am also getting red wash next to the body and red ventral fins. Nothing that affects the form, but all else being equal, he will be penalized for it at the shows. The Blue, Green and Turquoise classes are always well represented so these boys need to be as close to perfect as we can get.

New Spawn

blue1Our spawns have not been going as planned. We have had egg eaters, no spawns and fish getting the tar knocked out of them. I want to get into breeding greens. So, at the first show of the season I purchased a trio of greens from the top breeder of Bettas right now, Mohan. They are siblings of Best of Variety and Best of Show fish so I was delighted to add them to my fish room.

Shortly after we got the fish settled in we tried to breed the male with one of the females. We got about a dozen fry as the parents ate eggs. I was not sure about the male until a second spawn with the other female resulted in a large number of eggs put up into a nest.. but as the days passed their numbers decreased until there were none. Seems the male was more interested in eating then raising young.

So the old boy was out. I really wanted to get some of the genetics of these fish to have to cross into what I had already going on, so I crossed that first female to one of the males from my second spawn. That spawn  produced probably 90% full Halfmoons so adding a line with great fins and a broader dorsal base to it should produce some nice fry.

jade1So we chose the male pictured above. He is a nice metallic with a white fringe around the edges of his fins. He had gotten his tail a bit chewed up by fungus as a youngster but has full 180 spread and strong rays. He was crossed with Jade.. the female pictured to the left. She’s a bit tore up after breeding but has a nice broad dorsal and good balance in her fins. The fry are about a week old now and there appears to be quite a few.. I’d guess close to 80 anyway. We will give them a few more weeks in the spawn tank then into the 30 to grow out they will go. Can’t wait to see what this cross produces.

Cambodia Spawn Update

red-1The spawn with the pet shop Bettas is producing a spawn of all Cambodians it seems. I netted a few and put them in a container [that I didn’t realize was scratched] and took a few update photos. This one is a little darker bodied than most of the others and his fins have all gone red. We are starting to also see some of the Crowntail from his dad showing up in the fins as well.

red-3This is one of the few that has a bit of shimmer and irridescence to the body. The father carried that trait as well. It also looks like we are getting some brancing in the tail rays. Will see what everybody looks like in a week with feeding the beef heart we just got.

red-2Just another shot of the fry.

Copper Spawn bring on the Shine

young Copper Male Betta
young Copper Male Betta

The first spawn I did [Copper x Copper] is also coming along nicely. This bunch, though older by a few weeks, took longer to show some maturity. A week or so ago I though I had a tank full of females. I started to jar up the bigger fish and also started doing ever other day water changes and here we now have some very nice males. This one is a solid Copper and his fins are very nice. He is my current favorite solid colored male.

01-mbf5A very pleasant suprise has been the marbles and Butterflies I have gotten from this spawn. Check this guy out. He is a Copper Marble with a very nice Butterfly patter developing.

01-mbf2Here’s another picture of him showing the marbling a bit better. I love everything about this fish and will probably end up keeping him.

01-3In addition to the Marbled Copper Butterfly I got two really nice Copper Butterflies out of this spawn so far. This guy is patterened pretty and the edges are a nice white.. not quite what the picture is showing. I’m hoping he will be showable down the road.

01-bf1And here is the other Copper Butterfly. He too is developing into a real nice fish and should also be a show fish for us. The hard part is going to be letting some of these guys go.

01-fm3We have several nice females now as well. This is one of the girls. They are getting large and some are starting to show verticle bars and flaring back at the Juvie Males. This girl is one I am watching right now.

01-mf2The Marble pattern is starting to show up in the females now as well. This was one of the first to loose some color. Not the best picture but we are showing some nice fins as well.

Female Crowntail

allieHere is Allie. This is the female Crowntail  that we got with the Copper male Crowntail. Sorry about the water spots.. she was free swimming in the sorority tank and they all had food on their minds. Compared to the other girls, she is a bit bulkier. Her fins are cool.. and best of all.. my son really likes her. We will give her a few weeks to settle in then get here in the spawning tank.
