Basement Bettas

Raising Show Quality Bettas

More Fish for Sale

Kinda hanging on to a few males as the show season is coming up. But have some later bloomers from spawns where I showed fish this past fall. These guys are a few young males from my metallic spawn 43. This spawn throw big finned fish that carry their finnage well, even in old age. They are late to develop as they get big, thick bodies before the finnage started to come in. I prefer that over fish that get big long fins on the smaller, thinner bodies.. seems the finnage is not as sturdy as the fins on a more slower maturing fish. We got some great multis, greens and coppers in this spawn. The females are all very balanced and I don’t think I had a bad female in the bunch. Many took placings this past fall. So here are some of they boys I have left.

Got a cute and young butterfly royal male. He still needs to do some growing, but he is on track to be a very nice fish. Not as good a butterfly pattern as would like for showing.. but form wise he is super nice and being butterfly he carries marble. He would be a nice male to bring good branching and big finnage to a marble line.

And last, but surely not least.. my metallics crossed to a royal male I got from Karen McAuley. If your into bettas you know she is one of the top US breeders right now. Her fish have great form and are sturdy.. good bodies and top lines. My metallics also have nice bodies, good overall balance and great branching. Colorwise we are all over the place. But, with the form genetics in these fish we will reel back the color to solid metallics. If your into multis or marbles these girls would be great.

Spawn Updates

Things in the fish room have smoothed out now that we are using the reverse osmosis water. We have imported a few new fish, like Hershey to the left, to start new lines and I am actively seeking more tanks to use as grow outs for all the spawns we now have. After losing 12 spawns we now have:

Spawn 17 –  Storm x 13-2 – these guys are 12 weeks and many are on AquaBid for sale. We are keeping two pairs that carry a lot of black to start towards breeding black/melano. We have already bred one pair and got a large  spawn.

Spawn 18Storm x TB – an outcross into a friends line. The spawn that TB came from produced BOS fish and several class winners. TB herself was 2nd in her class earlier this year. I’m expecting multi colors and some black in this spawn as well. Only got 4 fish from this spawn.. it was one of the last with the bad water.

Spawn 1912-C x 12-1 This was a dark copper male with white fringe and a marble female that had great caudal edges and a nice, broad dorsal. We were looking for nice dark or light coppers to show in the metallic classes with this cross. About 8 weeks of age, we have started pulling some of the boys to keep fins intact and the fish growing. So far, I am happy with the quality. We have several boys with the sharp edges we want and others that are almost there. The ones that are almost there will probably be shown in the spring. I have a really nice female coming that is platinum white and will probably be bred as soon as is possible. Most of the colors are a medium copper.. have about 3 really dark ones, some that are starting to marble and a lot of the lighter platinums. We also have a number of double tails in this spawn that are developing well and 1 boy that looks to be a copper/red bicolor. Another few weeks will tell a lot more.

Spawn 20Storm x TB A repeat of Spawn 18.. see above.

Spawn 21 Copper/Red BF x Copper/Red Another copper spawn that are siblings to the previous spawn 19. We were looking to get the copper/red color established. They are about 6 weeks right now and I’m seeing platinum and some with a hint of red in the fins. We still need a few more weeks to see color and how the fins are coming. They are in a grow out with the above spawn so there are a lot of fish in the 30 gallon. I combined the spawns as the coppers breed true. If it is a copper variation.. it is this spawn.. otherwise it came from the above spawn.

Spawn 22Royal x 13-2 This male came from a friend. He has huge fins and nice color. He was bred to a female from my 13th spawn that is green. I am hoping for some nice blues and greens in this spawn.. and will probably get some multi colors as well. I was looking to get the males color and fin length with the females sharp edges and broad dorsals. They are about a month now and growing out in a 30 gal about 4” off the ground. Kinda hard to get down there and look at everybody.. but they appear to be developing nice. Another few weeks and we will start to take a hard look at them.

Spawn 23 – Patches x 13-1 This pair are siblings. The male, a green and white marble, took 2nd at the first show of the season  and got his fins tore up on the return shipping, thus ending his show career. These fish are about a month now but the colors I’m seeing are very nice.. blue, green, minty green and some multi colors.. and I’m seeing several of the nice wide dorsals and double tails.  I am hoping some of them turn into grizzles as I love that coloring. I am also expecting some nicely patterned marbles.

Spawn 24Copper/Red x 11-2 This spawn is to get some nice metallics. My coppers have really balanced form and full finnage. The female I bred him with is a very nice female that has great 180 spread, nice branching, broad dorsal and took 2nd to some very nice competition last spring. She is a blue green multi.

Spawn 25Sunny x Pineapple. Sunny is the blue/yellow bicolor DT we imported from Thailand recently from GreatBettas and Pineapple is a yellow pineapple imported from the same breeder earlier this year. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking when I crossed them. I wanted to get more of the blue/yellow bicolor. I am expecting multi color fry but hope to get a few that are decent bicolors. I don’t know enough about the genetics behind the yellow.. and it may disappear for a few generations. This spawn will be a surprise. They are about 3 weeks now and are dull, no color has appeared as of yet.

Spawn 2617-A x 17-1 These two are siblings from Spawn 17 that are mostly black with some green iridescence. Male has great dorsal and nice edges and the female has a nice 180 spread and good branching. I am hoping for more of the black color and good finnage. The anal fin of the male fish is too sloped for my tastes right now, so we will have to watch for that in the future generations and look for better balance in the offspring as we get the color we want. Breeding blacks is difficult as the melano females are sterile. I’ve loved the blacks from the beginning, but now feel I have the patience and experience to work them. The spawn is quite large so we will have a number of fish to choose from. We will also be crossing another black pair from this spawn. Will keep you posted.
Spawn 27 – Rags x Daisy. Two new imports from Thailand. Just got the male Tuesday and into the spawn tank he went Thursday. Friday I had eggs and removed the female. He is a blue and yellow grizzle and she is a blue and yellow DT marble. I am hoping to get more fish colored like the parents. I love the grizzle pattern and am very excited to get this pattern in this coloring. There are 4-6 weeks before I will be able to see the color and the form of the fry. This is the beginning of a new line for us so we have no idea what to expect. But, they are from the same breeder, GreatBettas, and am confident they will produce some outstanding Bettas.

On the horizon to breed are Hershey, the chocolate DT that we imported with Rags and our reds. Hershey will probably be crossed to one of the black females from spawn 17. He should bring better color and some broader dorsal bases into the line. The reds are being a real pain. They spawned when the water was real bad, got a huge spawn, and they all died after hatching. I tried to breed them again and no one is interested. Male build huge nest, female not interested.. when he get bored with the whole think she rips his fins almost all off. I may try crossing him with the Pineapple as they yellow is a related color. With so many spawns going right now I will have to wait a bit. I’m now acquiring larger tanks to grow out the 600+ fry I currently have. Time to get some more barracks built.

Another import..

We decided to get a male to go with the female on the previous post. We won her auction and posted a bid on a nice double tail mail.. but was beat out in the bidding while I was sleeping. I know better, should have just hit the Buy it Now button and been done with it. So, we bought a similar male. Huge dorsal and has a long body for a double tail. We have the pineapple here from this breeder to cross into as well so we should have some very nice fish in the Spring. I want to continue the blue and yellow marble pattern on the female. The other male had more yellow fins.. did not fade into the black edging like this male. Since I am always thinking about what class a fish could go into.. I would prefer a clean bi-color. But that can be worked on if future generations. They should be shipping to the transshipper today. I may not have them untill next week. I can’t wait!

Oh no.. another import

I finally have a lot of spawns here.. so don’t need any fish. Matter of fact, we are down sizing to get ready for the young ones. So.. I had no business on AquaBid. My favorite breeder, GreatBettas, has a beautiful double tail female that is a really a neat color. I place a bid.. the auction closes in about 12 hours. Will see if tomorrow I own yet another Betta. Here is the picture and video of this beauty.

Spawn 15 ~ Rocket cross

If you have been reading previous posts, this boy was a favorite in my Spawn 11. We call him Rocket as he went everywhere fast and had that great bad boy attitude I love in bettas. After the Michigan show we threw him in a spawn tank with a sister that took second in her class.. and the female that beat her went BOS.  We are very hopeful and excited to see what this spawn produces. This will be the first sibling cross we have done. All our other crosses have been out crosses to bring in different genetic material to improve the line. So far, this spawn is not a disappointment.

Both Rocket and his sister carry doubletail in their genetics. The wider dorsal base both fish have testifies to that. So, even though the DT is a recessive trait, there is an expectation to get doubletails in this spawn. So far we have at least a dozen very nice DT’s coming along and they are the largest fish in the spawn.

It is really neat to watch them grow and develop. Their color is just beginning to come on and with a Royal x Royal we expect Royals, Turqs and Greens. So far most of the DT’s look to be royal.. hopefully we get a green as I love that color. Come fall, we will have this spawn matured and ready for the shows. In addition to the regular classes we will now have some fish for the DT classes as well. With the beauty of the doubletail finnage comes the increased chance of deformities. Bent or crooked spines and uneven tail lobes are common with them. So far they seem ok.. but they are still a bit too small to really evaluate.

Taking photos like this shows me we do have some issues [see the bumpy topline] and we will have to deal with that as they mature. He has a nice, evenly lobed tail.. but if the topline does not smooth out with growth, he will become Oscar food.

Spawn 14 ~ DT White x Copper

We started out to breed Copper Bettas. We got some really nice fish and entered some shows.. and did well. We got hooked on breeding and showing and came back to the fish room to improve our fish. So far, we have been successful.. except with our Coppers. I bred this Copper line and got fry, then dad ate them. So bred again and pulled dad early.. and the eggs got fungus. Then they beat each other up on the next few breedings. I have a friend that has managed to keep the line going and won a class at his first show with them. But my fish.. UGH! Finally, I crossed a white double tail male to one of the females and we got fry. They are now about 10 weeks old and they all look like this. A pretty silvery platinum color. I’m seeing the broader dorsal bases and so far pretty clean color. There is a little pink wash in a few of them.

We will take the best of this spawn and cross them into each other. I am still new to all the genetic stuff, but I have been told I will get back to the Copper that way. And, I can always get some stock from my friend if need be. If you are going to raise fish, it is not a bad idea to find someone who will share lines with you. That way, if something happens, the lines you have worked so hard to attain are not totally lost.

Bubba

1The largest fish in this spawn also has a large dorsal. Somewhere there is some Double Tail in his linage. He has been fun to watch grow. The father of the males I have jarred is the Copper male that I have pictured as the blog photo. Most of the spawn have a bit of a shimmer to them. But I expected blues/greens/steels so a shimmer was also expected with those colors. This fish is dark bodied with this bit of green over the top. It is a shame he lost his ventrals.. it would really add this cool little fish.

f10And here is Bubba today. Nice fin growth in the last 10 days. Color is still a bit boring.. will have to see what develops. Bubba has taken to flaring at his neighbors.. and they are actually flaring a bit back.

Going to try to get some better pictures now that these boys are jarred. These guys now are going to daily water changes and lots of live foods. Hopefully we will have something show-able in a few months.

Dueces Wild

f4This group is turning out to be my Wild Card bunch. A Copper x Blue/Yellow, I expected an assortment of blues, greens, and steels with maybe a hint of the copper glint. What I have is quite an assortment. Most are kinda dull looking with many having red in their fins. I have one brilliant blue and at least one marble. With the camera flash there are glints of green and turquoise as well.

f1Here is one of the plainer ones. There is just a touch of green shimmer and lots of red in the fins. Neither parent had red, so really scratching my head as to where it is coming from.

f2

This one has more of the green covering the fish and the red has a bit of a butterfly type pattern. The fins seem nice on this one. There are a few that are patterned like this.

f3Without the flash, this guy is pretty dull. But the flash brings out several colors on this fish and more of the red fins.

f6This is my brilliant blue fry. Up until this week it was solid.. now it is showing a little white patch on the top of its body.

f9This is another shot of the one in the first picture. Though not the best quality picture, you can still see the large dorsal fin. It is the largest fish in this spawn and without the camera flash, is a very dull brown color with lighter tan fins. The flash shows a bit of blue shimmer in the dorsal and sprinkled on the tail. It also has managed to loose its ventral fins.

marbleAnd where did this come from?? This was solid colored a little over a week ago. And now, it has been losing color. The camera flash shows a bit of green shimmer over the body. I may have a few others that end up like this as they are starting to get a bit splotchy.

I can only assume with this variety in the fry, that the female may come from marble stock. That big dorsal in that one fry makes me think somewhere in both parents family tree is some Doubletail. This bunch is changing so much from week to week the next month should prove interesting.
