Basement Bettas

Raising Show Quality Bettas

How we got Started

A little bit about me..

As a kid I had tropical fish. Mostly livebearers like guppies and swords. Through out life I always had a tank of these kinds of fish as they were low maintenance and enjoyable to watch.

In 1991 I ended up in Texas. There I bought some Bettas and bred them on my patio. They were bred and raised in galvanized wash tubs and as they matured they were housed in 2 liter Pepsi bottles with the tops cut off on some shelves I had out there. The water got green with algae, I fed mosquito larvae that appeared in a saucer I had for my plants and traded them to a local fish guy for more brine shrimp eggs and food. When the weather cooled I shut down the operation and started again the next year.

In time I moved on to other things but maintained a community tank. Eventually I ended up in Ohio and my son wanted to have a fish tank in his room. We set it up and went looking for fish and he wanted a Betta. It is understandable as they are brilliantly colored, have neat personalities, are fairly easy keepers and it is cool to watch them flare. So we got a Red Cambodian Crowntail male and a Cambodian Veiltail female. I then got cruising around the internet and found the IBC and the Halfmoon Betta. All I could think was WOW!!

It was not long before I wanted some of these fish for myself. I really liked the metallic colors so went looking for some quality fish for breeding. Our search led to Thailand where we bought and imported a couple of pairs. That was the beginning of our lines.

Our first spawns produced some very nice fish so we started to show them in the Fall of 2009. My son went into the New Breeder classes and pretty much cleaned house. He was the Best of Show male and female in New Breeders the first two shows he entered. I jumped right in with the sharks in the open classes. Getting a placing against others that have been doing this longer than I have has been just as much a thrill as my son’s BOS. We made many friends, learned a lot and enjoyed our first season showing our Bettas. I finished the 2009-2010 season in 14th place and my son was 2nd place New Breeder.

We have moved back to Texas and are getting our fish room setup and producing quality Bettas once again. We will be regular entries in the shows and hope to place in the top 10 the 2010-2011 season.

Where did the name come from? When I started I had a 3300 sq ft [per floor] historic building with 3 floors and a basement. My retail shop was on the first floor and I intended to put the fish in the basement.. Basement Bettas. But a friend suggested the room on the 2nd floor that had 3 large windows and a bathroom. Deciding to take advantage of the plumbing and the natural light and heat.. we put the fish up there.. but liked the name enough to keep. Now, in an apartment, we continue to breed our fish for shows, sales and breeding. Maybe one day we will have a basement fish room.

Our desire is to produce high quality Coppers and Metallics as well as nicely patterned Marbles and Butterflies. In time we are looking to add Black and Reds to what we are breeding. We hope to have fish for sale for both the serious breeder as well as those just wanting a Beautiful Betta to enjoy around the house. Feel free to email us at any time with questions or requests for fish.

    • I also saw a beautiful blue/purple male in your photos I would be interested in. Thanks.

Comment by nancy anne katz | April 1, 2013 | Reply

    • I do not breed for rose tail. It is a serious fault.. it affects the balance of the fish and you often get bad scales. I do not currently have any males for sale.

  13. I am very sorry, I didn’t realize that. Sorry to have bothered you.

Comment by nancy anne katz | April 3, 2013 | Reply

    • You did not bother me. Just may not understand what I breed for. Some people like them, but for a show line it is to be avoided. And since others may read the posts, just letting them and you know genetically it creates some ugly and deformed fish, as well as some with the bad scales and that shorter rose tail. It is not someting a breeder wants to see crop up in teir fish.

  14. Is it hard to breed the bettas? I have a female betta (not sure which kind) who is blue, black, and red. I’m not trying to breed with her, as she is a year and a half old, so, getting older, and when she’s gone, :(, I’m interested in breeding them. My dad says we wouldn’t be able to find enough homes for them, and I kind of have a soft spot for everything, and cry at the slightest things, and he knows that. Do you know any ways for a pre-teen in a private school to give new homes to bettas, if I do get into it? Non-profit or not.
Also, how do you breed bettas? I’ve seen a lot of stuff online, videos, how to’s, but it seems you’re really good with this, so I’m asking you.
Final thing. I’m honest to tell you I don’t mean to be rude at all, so please don’t take this personally. Why are you’re bettas $20? You could get bettas at walmart for $4-5. I know they’re specially bred, so maybe, then, $8. Plus S+H, maybe $10, or something.
    Thanks for listening!

    • You might want to hang out on BettaSource.com. It is a site I am co-founder on and there is a lot of info there. There are articles on the site and a friendly forum of all levels of experience to help answer your questions.

    • I breed to a show standard. And a $20 betta is going to match that more than a pet shop fish for $5. A really nice fish I put a $25 or $30 price tag on. I often have generations of selective breeding in a fish so breeding it will give you some consistency and not a genetic dump of traits you don’t want. Shipping is expensive with the insulated box and my time to package and mail them. I have paid $120 for a fish the had it imported. So it depends on what you want. A good article about what it takes to ship a fish to you is here: http://basement-bettas.com/purchasing-from-us/108-purchasing-from-us/78-box-not-free.html

For breeding check out BettaSource.com. I am co-founder there and have written the articles on the site. We also have a nice forum for help. Bettas can produce a LOT of offspring. You may or may not get them all to adulthood. There has to be some time comittment to breeding them. If you are successful and get them to adults you do need homes for them or a large fish eater because you can’t keep them all. Trust me.. a few hundred fish will demand several HOURS of your time EVERY night. Might see if a local pet shop would be interested. Not the national chains like petco.. but smaller family owned shops. Do not expect to get much for them as they can buy a male betta for about twelve cents. So you practically have to give them the fish and get some sort of store credit. But it allows you to keep breeding.

  16. Do you breed half moons, I’m looking for a female

    Comment by Amy | October 6, 2014 | Reply

  17. Hello,
I’m a new breeder! I’ve worked with fish and animals since I was very young. I’ve always been obsessed with bettas. I’ve invested a lot of time, and money into my betta set up (I’d like to try and get off to the best start as possible). I work at a pet store, so I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly as far as bettas go, at least I thought so. Then I started looking at show quality bettas… I’ve yet to stop drooling! I collected a few of my very favorite bettas from our shipments at work. I know it’s not preferred to start off with pet store bettas, so I also have an amazing pair (the male is stunning… The female is… Large! Ha!) I recieved from a breeder on eBay. Anyways, I would love some critique on my betta breeding plans. I’ve spent countless hours reading, watching youtube videos, and looking at aquabid! Basement bettas has come up numerous times!! I’ve started conditioning my first pair and will be introducing them in 2 weeks. Any advice??
    Thanks,
    Jessie

    • Check out the articles on BettaSource.com. I am co-founder there and have written most of the articles. The forum is also friendly and educational. There is a section there where I critique fish and you can ask questions. I am also in the process of working up a power point I will give online to teach some betta basics needed w hen evaluating fish for breeding or showing. Now that I am moved I have some more videos planned as well.
